Onion – 1 large (divided)

Garlic Powder – 1 teaspoon

Worcestershire Sauce – 1 tablespoon

Dijon Mustard – 1 tablespoon

Bread Crumbs – ¼ cup

Egg – 1

Salt – ½ teaspoon

Black Pepper – ¼ teaspoon

Olive Oil – 2 tablespoons

Butter – 2 tablespoons

Cremini Mushrooms – 8 ounces, sliced

All-Purpose Flour – 2 tablespoons

Beef Broth – 2 cups

Heavy Cream – ½ cup

Fresh Thyme Leaves – 1 teaspoon

Salt & Black Pepper (for gravy) – To taste

Fresh Parsley (chopped) – For garnish

Instructions

1. Prepare the Patty Mixture

Finely chop half of the onion and add it to a large mixing bowl.

Combine with ground beef, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, bread crumbs, egg, salt, and black pepper.

Mix gently with your hands or a spoon until just combined — avoid overmixing to keep the patties tender.

2. Shape the Patties

Divide the beef mixture into four equal portions and form into round, even patties about ¾ inch thick.

Press a small indentation in the center of each to help them cook evenly.

3. Sear the Patties

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.

Add the patties and cook for 4–5 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked to your liking.

Remove from the pan and set aside on a plate.

4. Start the Gravy Base

In the same skillet, reduce heat to medium and melt the butter.

Slice the remaining half of the onion and add it to the pan.

Sauté for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft, golden, and caramelized.

5. Add the Mushrooms

Add the sliced cremini mushrooms to the onions and cook for 5–6 minutes, until tender and lightly browned.

This adds rich, earthy flavor to the sauce.

6. Build the Roux

Sprinkle the flour evenly over the mushrooms and onions.

Stir continuously for about 1 minute to cook out the raw flour taste — this will thicken your gravy later.

7. Add Liquids and Flavor

Gradually pour in the beef broth while whisking to prevent lumps, then stir in the heavy cream and fresh thyme.

Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, allowing it to thicken into a smooth, velvety gravy.

8. Simmer and Season

Let the gravy cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it reaches your desired consistency.

Season to taste with salt and black pepper.

For an extra layer of flavor, add a splash of red wine at this stage.

9. Smother the Steaks

Return the seared patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy.

Spoon the sauce generously over each one and let them simmer together for 2–3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

10. Serve and Enjoy

Transfer the saucy hamburger steaks to serving plates, spooning extra gravy over the top.

Sprinkle with fresh chopped parsley and serve warm with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered green beans for the perfect comfort meal.
