Garlic Jalapeño Smoky BBQ Sauce
Garlic Jalapeño Smoky BBQ Sauce
Ingredients
For the Garlic Jalapeño Smoky BBQ Sauce
1 cup ketchup
¼ cup apple cider vinegar
¼ cup packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons molasses
2–3 fresh jalapeños, finely chopped
4 garlic cloves, finely minced
¼ cup yellow onion, finely diced
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1½ teaspoons smoked paprika
1 teaspoon chili powder
½ teaspoon ground cumin
½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
½ teaspoon salt, or adjust to taste
¼ cup water, plus more if needed to thin the sauce
1–2 tablespoons chopped chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, optional, for extra smoky heat
Instructions
Sauté the Aromatics:
Heat a medium saucepan over medium heat.
Add the finely diced onion and chopped jalapeños. Cook for about 3–4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they begin to soften.
Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 30–60 seconds, just until fragrant.
Build the BBQ Sauce:
Add the ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, molasses, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, and tomato paste.
Stir until everything is thoroughly combined.
Add the smoked paprika, chili powder, cumin, black pepper, and salt.
If using chipotle peppers in adobo, stir them in at this stage.
Simmer the Sauce:
Pour in the water and stir well.
Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low.
Cook uncovered for about 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce becomes thicker, glossy, and deeply aromatic.
Blend to Your Preferred Texture:
For a smooth BBQ sauce, use an immersion blender to purée the mixture directly in the saucepan.
Alternatively, allow the sauce to cool slightly, then carefully transfer it to a countertop blender and blend until smooth.
If you prefer a chunkier, more rustic sauce, leave it unblended.
Adjust the Flavor:
Taste the sauce and make any final adjustments.
Add more jalapeño or chipotle for extra heat, a little additional brown sugar for more sweetness, or a splash of apple cider vinegar for stronger tanginess.
If the sauce is thicker than desired, stir in a small amount of water until it reaches your preferred consistency.
Cool and Store:
Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the BBQ sauce to cool completely.
Transfer it to a clean airtight jar or container and refrigerate.
For the best developed flavor, chill the sauce for several hours or overnight before serving.
