Amish Poor Man’s Steak

Ingredients

For the Patties

Ground beef – 2 pounds

Saltine crackers – 1 ½ cups (about 1 sleeve), finely crushed

Whole milk – 1 cup

Italian seasoning – ½ teaspoon

Garlic powder – ½ teaspoon

Onion powder – ½ teaspoon

Cayenne pepper – ¼ teaspoon

Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper – to taste

All-purpose flour – for dredging, as needed

For the Gravy

Condensed cream of mushroom soup – 2 cans (10.75 ounces each)

Whole milk – 1 ½ cups

Fresh parsley – 1 ½ tablespoons, finely chopped

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat and Prepare

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with non-stick spray and set aside.

Step 2: Make the Gravy

In a medium bowl, whisk together the condensed cream of mushroom soup and milk until smooth.

Stir in the chopped parsley, then set the gravy aside.

Step 3: Mix the Patties

In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, crushed saltine crackers, milk, and all seasonings (Italian seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne, salt, and pepper).

Gently mix until just combined—do not overwork the meat.

Shape the mixture into evenly sized patties.

Step 4: Dredge and Sear

Lightly coat each patty in flour.

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.

Sear the patties on both sides until golden brown. (They will finish cooking in the oven.)

Step 5: Bake

Arrange the seared patties in the prepared baking dish.

Pour the gravy evenly over the top.

Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 30–40 minutes, or until the patties are fully cooked and tender.

To Serve

Serve warm over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice.

Garnish with fresh parsley for added flavor and color.

Tips & Variations

Make-ahead option: Freeze uncooked patties and gravy separately for easy preparation later.

Add mushrooms: Stir in sautéed mushrooms to enrich the gravy.

Round out the meal: Pair with steamed vegetables or a crisp side salad for balance.
