Apple Dumplings
Ingredients:
2 (8 ounces) cans refrigerated crescent rolls
1 (20 ounces) can apple pie filling
1 c (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
1 c brown sugar
1 can lemon-lime soda
Instructions
Start by preheating the oven to 350°F and greasing a baking dish measuring 13″ x 9″.
Next lay out the crescent roll triangles. Evenly distribute the apple filling on each triangle.
Roll up the triangles making sure to seal in the filling and place them in the baking dish.
In a bowl mix together butter and brown sugar until you achieve a smooth consistency. Then add a dollop of this mixture on top of each rolled-up triangle.
Carefully pour lemon lime soda, between the rolls being mindful not to get it on top of them.
Bake for 35 to 40 minutes. Until they turn golden brown. Once done serve warm. If desired you can optionally add cream or ice cream as a topping.
Notes
To make these Apple Dumplings gluten-free, replace the crescent rolls with gluten-free pastry dough, available in most stores or online. The filling and other components remain the same. Enjoy this classic treat, now gluten-free!

Frequently Asked Questions:
Can I use homemade apple pie filling instead of canned?
Absolutely! Homemade apple pie filling can be used instead of canned.
Simply prepare your favorite apple pie filling recipe and use it in place of the canned filling.
Can I substitute the lemon-lime soda with another type of soda?
Yes, you can experiment with different sodas if you prefer.
Some people enjoy using ginger ale or even cola for a slightly different flavor profile.
How do I know when the apple dumplings are done baking?
The apple dumplings are ready when they turn golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
This typically takes about 35 to 40 minutes in a preheated 350°F oven.
Can I prepare apple dumplings in advance and bake them later?
Yes, you can assemble the apple dumplings ahead of time and refrigerate them until you’re ready to bake.
However, it’s best to wait until just before baking to pour the lemon-lime soda over them to prevent the dough from becoming soggy.
Can I freeze apple dumplings for later?
Yes, you can freeze unbaked apple dumplings for later.
Simply assemble them as instructed but do not pour the soda over them.
Instead, wrap the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap and aluminum foil, then freeze.
When ready to bake, thaw in the refrigerator overnight, pour the soda over them, and bake as directed.
Can I use salted butter instead of unsalted butter?
While unsalted butter is typically recommended for baking to control the amount of salt in the recipe, you can use salted butter if that’s what you have on hand.
Just be mindful of the overall saltiness of the dish.
What if I don’t have a 13″ x 9″ baking dish?
If you don’t have a baking dish of that size, you can use a similar-sized dish or even divide the apple dumplings between two smaller baking dishes.
Is it necessary to grease the baking dish?
Yes, greasing the baking dish helps prevent the apple dumplings from sticking to the bottom during baking and makes for easier cleanup afterward.
Can I make this recipe without the brown sugar and butter mixture on top?
While the brown sugar and butter mixture adds flavor and caramelization to the apple dumplings, you can omit it if you prefer a lighter version.
However, the final result may be less rich and sweet.
Can I serve apple dumplings cold?
While apple dumplings are traditionally served warm, you can certainly enjoy them cold if you prefer.
Just be aware that the texture and flavor may differ slightly from when they’re freshly baked.
